Moving from a standard optical mouse to a gaming mouse is perhaps the first and most important upgrade you should make, when building a gaming setup. A good gaming mouse will, quite simply, make you better at games. In-game accuracy, response time, additional programmable mouse buttons and increased comfort are all guaranteed when making the switch from a cheap optical mouse to a tailor-made gaming mouse.

In 2021 however, there are hundreds of options to choose from. Gaming mice today have a massive variation in price-range, with the cheapest coming in at under £10, all the way to well into the triple figures. There are even mice that are custom made for particular games, or particular genres of game; the Razer Basiliskfor example, was specifically tailored for FPS (First Person Shooter) games. Today, we will take a look at some of the best (if not, the best) all-purpose gaming mice of 2021. But first, a quick rundown of mouse-terminology!

DPI: Dots per Linear Inch - How many "dots" can be detected by the mouse's sensor per inch; the higher the number, the more sensitive the mouse, and the higher the cursor speed (number and speed can be adjusted [reduced] easily, however).

Ergonomic: Which hand the mouse is built for; most are right-handed or ambidextrous builds, with some mice being built specifically for lefties.

Buttons: Number of buttons on the mouse (starting from the standard 2, i.e. left and right click)Most gaming mice have additional programmable buttons on the sides, to save you having to mess around with your keyboard during intense gaming moments.

With the important terminology out of the way, let the ranking begin!

1. Razer Deathadder V2

Ok, there may be some personal bias here, as I have used various iterations of the Deathadder over the past ten years.
However, I think it is reasonable to say that the Deathadder might just be the iconic gaming mouse.

The first edition was released 15 years ago in 2006, and the shape design has hardly changed - for good reason: there's no need to. A simple design with two perfectly positioned side buttons, this is one of the best all-around gaming mice on the market. The 20,000 DPI optical sensor is generous in quantity and quality, allowing complete precision in games while being comfortable for various hand sizes and grip types

Perhaps the only downside (and there are certainly not many), is that the Deathadder V2 is pricier than the base model Deathadder and the Deathadder Elite (£60 vs £30).However, Razer have a good warranty service and a Deathadder should last a good few years; furthermore, £60 really is not a huge price to pay compared to many gaming mice on the market today.
