2021 Presents: Far Cry 6
The sixth and latest installment of the Far Cry series promises to be more of the same game that we know and love, but simultaneously revitalising and revolutionary (no pun intended) for the series.
Ubisoft gave us a glimpse of what the game will look like with the release of the official trailer for Far Cry 6 earlier this year - and here is why you should be excited.

Set in the fictional Carribean island of Yara, Far Cry 6 will be set in the midst of a violent revolutionary war. Starring Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito, president Anton Castillo (played by the aforementioned) will take the role of Yara's overtly violent, supervillain dictator.
The trailer (watch here) shows Castillo's efforts to clutch onto the remnants of control he has over the populace, hoping that in the future his son Diego will follow in his footsteps in ruling the island. The father and son head onto a rooftop, looking at the rioting citizens below, and the cinematic trailer ends as the island's future dictator holds a primed hand-grenade over the edge of the building...

As fans of the Far Cry franchise know, any release in the series promises action-packed FPS and RPG gameplay, in relatively open world environments that yearn to be explored. Far Cry has become known for its lawless and violent in-game environments, pitting the player against militias in Africa, North America, and even outer-space in the form of DLC packs. A number of new features, as well as a storyline like never before, make Far Cry 6 worth playing for fans of the series and newcomers alike.
If the trailer and dramatic introduction was not enough to tempt you, a number of revelations (and a healthy amount of pure speculation) has been made about what the characters and gameplay of Far Cry 6 will look like.
The playable main character in Far Cry 6 will be Dani Rojas - a young man caught up in the revolutionary mayhem of Yara, and seeking to rise up against the Castillo dictatorship. As shown in the trailer, this is not going to be an easy battle; more lore has been revealed that Anton Castillo's father died in a revolution similar to the one happening in Yara today - it is highly doubtful that the father-son dictatorship duo will give in easily.

There is more than the main storyline to worry about, however, in the fight to restore order to Yara. Naturally, in a failing authoritarian state, there are a number of politically-motivated and ruthless guerrilla groups fighting across the island, each for their own cause. Therefore, we can be sure that there won't be simply one set of enemies (Castillo's henchmen) looking to stand in the player's way in Yara, but dozens of inter-warring factions. The least we can say for sure is that Far Cry 6 won't be lacking in action!
Far Cry 6 will not simply be an "on-rails", yellow brick road FPS - the developers have certainly captured the RPG essence. Choices you make in the game will have a direct impact on outcomes, and the main playable character is customizable. The Guns for Hire feature also means that you don't have to (although you can if you are a true introvert hero) bring order to Yara alone.
More good news for fans of the series is that the "Fangs for Hire" system will be making its eagerly anticipated return! For those not in the know, Far Cry 5 introduced a combat-companion system dubbed Fangs for Hire, in which the player could recruit various animals to fight alongside them throughout the game. This co-op combat system will thankfully be sticking around for Far Cry 6 as well - after all, who doesn't want to wreak havoc with a cute dog by their side?

It seems that not only will Far Cry 6 be action-packed with a rich storyline, but also set in a wide array of environments that will ensure the gameplay stays fresh for many, many hours. Some players critiqued the environment and landscape art in previous Far Cry titles as becoming somewhat bland or monotonous. In Far Cry 5 for example, the endless rolling fields of North America (Hope County) became a bit stale for some players who felt that the landscape lacked variety. The environment and scenery of Far Cry 6, on the other hand, looks not only stunning but also deeply varied. Yara will feature jungles, small towns, beaches and also the island's ruinously chaotic capital city, Esperanza (seen briefly in the launch trailer).

So when can you get your hands on Far Cry 6, and how much will it cost?
Unfortunately, the announcement by Ubisoft that the game would be released in February has been retracted. The ongoing pandemic, along with other development issues, has pushed back the release date. Current speculation suggests thatFar Cry 6 will be released sometime around April 30, 2021, according to a sales listing by Dutch a gaming distributor, Proxis.
Far Cry 6 is expected to be sold on release at the typical price for a massive game like this; likely, somewhere between £55 - £65. As for platform availability, there is plenty to choose from: Xbox Series X, PS5, Xbox One, PS4, Stadia, and PC (the latter being available through Uplay and the Epic Games store).
There is certainly going to be more news and gossip to come before the the release date of Far Cry 6, so stay tuned for more news!
